Nantucket asking Sunshine to take him into port, Quarantine

Nantucket (nicknamed Old Dirt Bucket by Sunshine and Zorran) is a filthy, old tramp steamer and a notorious villain.

Biography[]

Nantucket's main appearance is in Quarantine, in which he attempts to trick Sunshine into taking him into port by pulling down his quarantine flag. After his plan is foiled, the Coast Guard sentences him to a further forty days in quarantine along with Zorran, who falls into Nantucket's trap.

He was eventually cleared from quarantine as he was seen in the port when the White Fleet visited in Ghosts.

His model also appears in the episode Trapped, as it takes the role of being the tramper that Zug was supposed to take to the Breaker's Yard. In the process it blocks the waterway after Zorran pushes it too hard and traps several of the Star Tugs and Zug up river. Billy Shoepack eventually blows it up with dynamite freeing everyone.

Trivia[]

  • Nantucket speaks with a Lancastrian accent.
  • His model is a combination of Old Rusty's hull and the bridge from Izzy Gomez's faceless superstructure.
  • He is the only tramp steamer to communicate via megaphone while all other trampers to talk, Izzy Gomez, Johnny Cuba, and Old Rusty, had their own faces, and Kraka-Toa never spoke at all.
    • When Sunshine pulls up and in wide shots, Nantucket's megaphone is missing.
  • In Salty's Lighthouse, Nantucket is renamed Tramper. In some episodes, he is able to speak, but in others he communicates with a foghorn sound effect instead and is less villainous.
    • The horn sound is a stock foghorn. It was also used for a cargo ship in the Disney film The Rescuers.

  • The top of his bridge and wheelhouse were removed to portray the old Tramper in Trapped. His funnel was also repainted and shifted more towards the stern.
  • An LV-112 lightship built in 1935 shared the same name as him. The same lightship served as the basis for Lillie Lightship's concept art.
  • Nantucket's model was destroyed during production of Trapped when it was split in half after being blown up.
    • For Trapped, a larger scale hull was also made. It's likely it was reused from another large hull instead of being made specifically for this episode.
