Smoker is described by Paul Knight as being a tough sort of character, based on Telly Savalas in his role as Lt. Theo Kojak in the crime drama series Kojak.[1]

In concept art, Smoker is depicted as being painted light grey. He has a black stripe around the top of his stack and the letter "S" underneath in red. His name is painted on the sides of his hull in white.
